Invitation to the White House
It took him less than a month to do something no president had ever done: formally invite a man of color to the White House to dine. Roosevelt is said to have told a friend that he wasnât sure whether he should invite a black man to the presidentâs official residence. Then Roosevelt felt such shame over those feelings that he immediately wrote a letter to Washington. âWhen are you coming north? I must see you as soon as possible. I want to talk over the question of future appointments exactly on the lines of our last conversation together,â he wrote.
